Special Report: Straight talk
Kelly Rainville, Mother
"She was desperately pleading us for help."
So the Rainvilles sent their daughter to Tenneesse. To Love in Action... A religious based program to help homosexual teens.
Reverend John Smid, Love in Action
"We offter them the option and the opportunity to pursue what it might look like to walk away from homosexuality."
Teens go through a two to six week in-house group program, where they are taught to resist acting on homosexual impulses.
Gerard Willman, Love in Action
"We don't change people's attractions. My attractions has not changed. What we're doing is trying to change people's behavior."
People who support gay rights believe this kind of progam can do harm. Wendy of Easton is an advocate for PFLAG - parents and friends of lesbians and gays. And mother to a gay son.
Wendy Hanawalt, Mother
"I feel badly for the children because what they're basically being told in these places is you're not okay the way you are. There's something wrong with you, there's something sinful, there's something bad about you."
But former patient and now employee Gerard Willman insists that the teens they minister want the help in their lives. And says their success rate is 60 to 70 percent.
Gerard Willman, Love in Action
"There are hundreds and thousands of us out there who don't want to live a gay lifestyle. And we want options. And this program is what helps me realize my options."
After going through the program, the Rainville's daughter entered into a new lesbian relationship. But the group believes even those who make that choice still benefit from the program, by learning important communcations skills.
Gerard Willman, Love in Action
"It's about increasing people's faith and bettering their walk with Christ."
