Special Report: Twinkies Turn 75
Hostess Twinkies--they are just about as American as apple pie and red white and blue--and why not? They've been around since 1930 and generations have grown up on the cream filled sponge cake.
"I loved them. I ate more of them in college once I got out of my parent’s house."
"We used to have them at like recess and would trade them for sports stuff they were almost like currency."
This year the Twinkie turns 75, and to commemorate the event Hostess is putting on a contest to create a cookbook made up of recipes by Twinkie lovers--using what else—Twinkies.
Mike Redd, Hostess
"Twinkies are all about having fun and that's what this anniversery is all about - and we look forward to people presenting their favorite recipe ideas."
And you thought you had to eat them right out of the bag. Not anymore. Over the years people have been improvising - with recipes from fruit kabobs to tasty tacos and tiramisu. Some even serve theirs up sushi style.
Mike Redd, Hostess
"Who we want to enter are all the fans out there - kids on up."
We found a local hotspot that offers their diner's a dessert with a Twinkie twist.
Robert George, General Manager, Anthem
"We have a fried Twinkie."
Robert George is the general manager of Anthem in Boston. He says they added the taste bud tingling Twinkie to their menu after realizing no other restaurant in Boston had a dessert like it.
Robert George, General Manager, Anthem
"It's incredibly popular and actually put us on the map."
So how do they make their sought after snack cake? Batter, fry and serve it up with whipped creme and fresh berries.
So is Anthem entering their Twinkie as a top dog?
Robert George, General Manager, Anthem
"As soon as we heard about it we submitted our recipe."
You can bite - I mean bet - on it.
Twinkies were created by Hostess baker Jimmy Dewar and originally had a banana filling. But World War II created a banana shortage and the Twinkie was replaced with vanilla crème
