Speaking Through the Static

Special Report: Speaking Through the Static

This idea of communicating with the dead is not something made up in Hollywood.

It's called electronic voice phenomenon or EVP.

Believers theorize spirits use the energy from the white noise or static emitted from a TV, radio or tape recorder to talk to their loved ones.

Karen Mossey, EVP Specialist
"What they do is they take this static and they manipulate it and form it into words."

Karen Mossey from Dover, New Hampshire claims to use a tape recorder to talk with her son and Father from beyond the grave.

Her son Rob died 4 years ago from a seizure.

Karen Mossey, EVP Specialist
" This was such a traumatic thing for me. I didn't know were to go to find answers to my grief."

That's when a friend introduced Karen toEVP.

The messages Karen claims to receive are often hard to understand so she edits the sound with special software.

Karen Mossey, EVP Specialist
"This is my son's voice saying yup this is Rob"

"Yup this is Rob."

Karen says hearing what she believes is her son's voice has helped her heal.

Karen Mossey, EVP Specialist
" When I heard that first voice I'm like oh my gosh. Oh My Gosh. Shaking."

Her father Stanley Searles died 2 years ago...one of his apparent conversations with Karen was used in a clip for the movie "White Noise"

The movie is generating a lot of discussion about life after death. Whether you believe or not... It has many talking about this theory of EVP.

" It's intriguing and all but I'm not so sure I believe any of it."

"I'm definitely into the whole paranormal activity thing."

Karen hopes the movie will open people's eyes to EVP but she says it's something you have to hear to believe.

"I love you!"

There are many skeptics when it comes to EVP. We spoke with Dr. Gary Schwartz, a professor at the Uiversity of Arizona who directs a research program on life after death. Although EVP is not his specialty, Dr. Schwartz says he has witnessed the phenomena. He says it's theoretically possible and believes it has happened on occasion. Dr. Schwartz thinks EVP deserves serious scientific research.
