Improved Implants

Special Report: Improved Implants

Melanie Higley is happy with her life. She has a wonderful husband and an adorable son.

Melanie Higley, Breast Implant Patient
"It's very busy. There's never a dull moment."

But she says breastfeeding has taken it's toll on her bustline.

Melanie Higley, Breast Implant Patient
"It deflated me, basically. I went from a B-cup to pretty much less than an A-cup."

And she wanted her "B's" back.

Melanie Higley, Breast Implant Patient
"I just wanted to get back what I had before."

Melanie decided to get breast implants but it was important to her that she'd be able to breast feed and they didn't look fake.

Melanie Higley, Breast Implant Patient
"I didn't want to have the boob job look."

So instead of traditional implants Melanie is among the first in this country to get one of these- affectionately known as the "gummy bear". And some doctors believe this new implant is the safest and most natural.

Dr. Grant Stevens, Plastic surgeon
"The actual name of the implant is cohesive gel. The gummy bear breast implant is just a euphemistic term to describe this implant because it feels like the consistency of jello or a gummy bear."

Dr. Grant Steven's one of the few doctors in the U.S. using the gummy bear says the cohesive gel is made from a solid form of silicone.

Dr. Grant Stevens, Plastic surgeon
"If this is injured or ruptured this gel will not escape the implant and leak because it is a cohesive gel -- not a liquid. You can actually cut it in pie shape wedges and it stays intact."

Cynthia Bush also got them after problems erupted with her saline implants.

Cynthia Bush, Breast Implant Patient
"My implant had deflated with the saline and I didn't want to get caught in the same position."

Another bonus - these implants are more true to the touch.

Dr. Grant Stevens, Plastic surgeon
"I think it's the perfect implant in terms of safety, feel and looks and I am convinced it will become the implant of choice over the next few years."

The women will be followed closely over the next decade to see how they do.

Cynthia Bush, Breast Implant Patient
"I feel very confident and I hope for the best."

Melanie is expecting her second child in a few months and has no regrets...

Melanie Higley, Breast Implant Patient
"I'm completely happy with what I did. I wouldn't change it."
