Special Report: Where To Put All The Snow?
Who doesn't love the day of a storm? Stay home and stay warm... or get outside and play. But who doesn't hate the day after a storm? When it's time to dig out. Today that's happening all over the city.
Jamal, Shea and Darrian are walking the streets of the South End... helping people dig out their cars... and making a few bucks.
Darrian Williams, Helping dig out cars
"It depends on how the car looks. If it's a lot we'll charge $30.00."
There's plenty of work to be found...
As some car owners like Nan Sauer dig out all by themselves.
Nan Sauer, Digging out car
"It's getting a little heavy... it was powder. Now it's heavy."
But for all the digging of parking spaces and sidewalks... nothing compares to the herculean task of major snow removal.
Coping with the powder that's been plowed off the streets... and left in huge piles. And that's a job that hasn't even begun.
Mayor Thomas Menino, (D) Boston
"Major snow removal begins at 10 tonight... with city officials electing not to begin with streets or neighborhoods but with schools. We want to try to get the schools open on Wednesday and try to get them cleared."
Boston Mayor Tom Menino said he's moving forward on finalizing plans for snow farms - locations in the city where large amounts of snow can be safely dumped and left to melt.
He promises they will be out of the way and safe.
Mayor Thomas Menino, (D) Boston
"None of them will be near water or the ocean because of environmental issues."
And all will be designated for large amounts of snow...meaning the powder packing your car right now will not make the cut.
Even as the dig out continues keep in mind a snow emergency is still in effect in Boston. There is no parking allowed on major streets. And as always... make sure not to shovel any snow back into the road.
