College Admissions Secrets

Special Report: College Admissions Secrets

When it comes to college admissions - you're either accepted or rejected, right? Well - maybe - but you don't always have to take no as their final answer.

Adam Goldberg, Educational consultant
"There is this thing called the admissions appeals process, that a lot of schools aren't necessarily publicizing."

Most schools have it - but few students know about it.

Adam Goldberg, Educational consultant
"It used to be a vehicle for combating discrimination, mishandling of information. The appeals process is really based on, was there something that was legitimately to happen in the admissions process that was unfair."

But as college admissions become more selective and competitive - students are looking for ways to help them stand out - and now post-rejection appeals are just another way to show their interest. Every year, thousands of students decide to do just that - giving them a second chance for admission.

Adam Goldberg, Educational consultant
"In some cases, the schools may think of that and turn around and say hey you know what, we want the kids who really want to be here."

Advisors warn however - that while successful appeals do happen - don't get your hopes up.

Adam Goldberg, Educational consultant
"The chances are very low. It's not to say, don't do it, but...the professionals are very good at what they do, and very seldom can you pull the wool over the eyes of the admissions committee."

Public universities are more likely to have a formal appeals process - but even some of the country's most selective private schools are willing to review their decisions. So if you think an appeal is the right move - check with the school's admissions office to find out how their process works.
