Cell Phones For Cash

Special Report: Cell Phones For Cash

"Cellforcash.com is a website where consumers and businesses can get value out of their old cell phones if they're not using it," cellforcash.com’s James Mosieur said.

There are websites popping up, like cellforcash.com, that buys thousands of used cell phones and pays consumers cold, hard cash for them.

"There are phones out there that have a lower value, 3, 4, 5, 10 dollars, but there are ones that go as high as 200," Mosieur said.

And that can be a lot better than collecting dust in a junk drawer.

"I’ve had 3 cell phones for a pretty long time that I had no idea what to do with," cell phone user Jean Varano said.

Jean Varano said that after searching on-line she stumbled onto a site called phoneiscash.com that helps to do away phones collecting dust.

"I read, a little history about the company and what they do with the phones as far as refurbishing them and then how they turn those phones around to underprivileged countries and other charitable organizations," Varano said.

So Varano shipped out three phones, getting cash back. How much exactly?

Varano received $58.

So how can you get dollars for phones you no longer dial? Simple! Log on to one of these websites, find your model, then the company will take it from there.

"We send the box with a prepaid label. They drop the cell phone in the box. The box comes back to us, we test it, verify to make sure it is what they said it was and 30 days later we send them a check," Mosieur said.

There are also used cell phone stores popping up all over the country like Ed Kissell's mobilsource. He too buys unwanted cell phones that still work and turns them around to offer deeper discounts

"A kid will lose a phone and the parents will say this is the second time or maybe it fell in the pool or whatever, they don't want to spend a lot of money. So they come in here and we will sell them a phone for 30, 40 50 dollars and the parents are very happy about that," Kissell said.

And for a small fee, some of the companies will reprogram your new phone to work on any cellular network.

"And it's almost and brand new phone at a lot less money than the price of a new one," Kissell said.

Experts say it's important to remember when selling a cell make sure you erase all of your personal information and cancel the service before getting rid of it.
