Special Report: Big Dig Viewer Comments

From Buddy:

Not only does the artery tunnel leak; another part of the project construction has problems. On Monday night, March 14, I was on the new North Station orange line outbound platform and water was pouring in around the light fixtures near the up escalator, part of the platform was blocked off... also many of the lights were out either by design or had shorted out.

From Fran:

I worked as a Project Manager/Radio Engineer on the Big Dig for Honeywell from 2002 to 2004. Let me tell you all the equipment in the Tunnel is outdated, damaged or only partial functional. We suggested changes upgrades, etc, but never were given the OK. That was both dealing with Bectell and the Turnpike. The equipment up to today is not maintained properly due to lack of personnel. The turnpike will not hire people because they feel its Bectell and Bectell feels like it’s the turnpike should take care of it. Let me tell you thee are problems in the Williams tunnel too, but not as bad as the Dig. Honeywell left the Project because Bectell would not pay them. I can vouch we did many upgrades in the field without getting money approvals from anyone just did them for safety reasons. By the way I'm no longer a Honeywell employee and am not in there corner. Just stating the facts.

From Anonymous:

Have somebody go through the tunnel with no money. Tell the toll collector, they will have you fill out an envelope and tell that you have two weeks to send it in or you will be find $250. Don't send it in. Nothing will happen to you. The same people do it everyday and they are getting through the tunnel for free. The turnpike doesn’t enforce it and people are taking advantage of it.

From Patty:

If I ran my household budget the same way, I would be homeless! Our Politicians don’t seem to care much; maybe they would agree to a pay cut and donate the proceeds to repairing this mess they created!

From Francis:

The biggest problem with the big dig is Jordan Levy. I grew up watching this man talk and talk and talk and get nothing accomplished. Jane Swift was correct in trying to oust this excuse of an authority that has gotten a free ride to do nothing his entire career. Governor Romney is correct in trying to do the same. The man was a city counselor and mayor (ceremonial) in Worcester for many years and look at Worcester. Not exactly a vacation resort! How can this guy who has been on the board of the big dig this long keep defending it? Let’s call a spade a spade. This guy just doesn’t get it.

From Kate:

When they said traffic in Boston would be a thing of the past, I knew it was too good to be true, but I still had hope that there would some relief. Boy, hope is out the window! The traffic is much worse in my opinion. I once sat in traffic for over four hours for what is normally an hour drive! And the Southbound tunnel, wow! People are constantly weaving in and out completely confused as to where their exit is going to be, and then they split the road between continuing on 93S and an exit and that’s always backed up. The northbound tunnel is a death wish if you drive the speed limit because everyone is going at least 70 in a 35 weaving in and out of lanes and flying around sharp turns. Also a safety concern, no cell phone reception. If get into an accident or break down in the middle of the tunnel, how can I call for help? This whole Big Dig was a big mess, and I regret every dollar of it.
