Von Trapp Family

Special Report: Von Trapp Family

Chances are you won’t recognize their faces, but you may know their last name: Von Trapp.

"It's just a little weird sometimes to see this big famous movie and know that those are your great-grandparents and those are just, your family up there," singer Melanie Von Trapp said.

Meet the Von Trapps; Sophie, Melanie, Amanda, and Justin. Their great-grand father was Captain Von Trapp, the real life inspiration for "The Sound of Music."

"It's really just amazing to know what you're great grandfather did and how they stood up to Hitler," singer Sophie Von Trapp said.

Like many in their family, they also have a knack for music. It was when their grandfather became ill that they decided to take it to the next level

"Our grandfather, who was portrayed as curt in ‘The Sound of Music,’ he actually got really sick and had a stroke and so we decided to because we always sang together," the Von Trapp’s said. "We just decided to make a CD for him."

The CD got into the hands of a concert promoter, and touring hasn't stopped since.

"It's fun just to be able to go on the road and meet a lot of new people and see a lot of cool places," the Von Trapp’s said.

The quartet grew up in Montana. They say touring can be fun, but they miss their friend’s back home

"We get a lot of support from them and it's just fun to know that you have the support back home from all your friends," singer Amanda Von Trapp said.

Sometimes they make jokes though about "The Sound of Music."

And in case you were wondering, they haven't met Julie Andrews.

The Von Trapps are winding their way through the United States this summer, but if you missed them when they were in town last week, don’t worry. Their manager tells us plans are in the works to have them back this winter performing with the Boston Pops.
