Special Report: Focus On Learning

If your child struggles in school - there is one test that doesn't require homework that could change their academic future

Dr. Stacy Lyons, Optometrist, New England Eye Institute
"Many times it can be a severe visual issue instead of a learning disability."

A child's eyes are the basic tools for learning, so a closer look at vision should be the first thing examined when a student is having trouble in the classroom.

Dr. Stacy Lyons, Optometrist, New England Eye Institute
"When eyes don't work efficiently it's not unusual that a child will avoid things like reading or school work."

After learning from their own student body that vision problems can mask themselves as learning disabilities, Framingham decided to do something about it

Kathy Majzoub R.N., Health Services Vision Coordinator
"Given a number of children struggle and we couldn't quite come up with an answer."

The school system teamed up with the New England Eye Institute to create the state's first in school comprehensive vision center.

Dr. Stacy Lyons, Optometrist, New England Eye Institute
"A comprehensive vision exam diagnosis a problem if there is one and treats it."

Like most children across the country - all Massachusetts students have routine eye screening exams but many times parents who are notified of a potential problem don't always seek help.

Kathy Majzoub R.N., Health Services Vision Coordinator
"Parents should be very well aware - and pediatricians also. You can't depend on a screen given the type on information you want to have on your child's vision."

So, instead of sending a kids to the eye doctor, Framingham brought the eye doctor to the kids. The vision center is located in the Fuller Middle School and it's available to every student no matter what grade or financial situation.

Chris Martes, Superintendent of Framingham Schools
"A number of people don't have health insurance so we have an opportunity to to reach out to the community that's in the greatest need."

Children who are diagnosed with vision problems will get help. Some will undergo vision therapy to help them focus and others can choose their own glasses.

The school system hopes to prove seeing better will help their students learn better.

The Framingham Public School Vision Center officially opens on Monday September, 27th. A public reception will be held at the center from  7 p.m. to 9 p.m. If you are interested in attending, please R.S.V.P. at 508-626-9197
