Special Report: Bill Mueller's Roots in St. Louis
At De Smet Jesuit High School in St. Louis, they are holding out hope for the Cardinals, but they are also rooting for Red Sox third baseman, Bill Mueller.
A 1989 graduate, Mueller played 3rd base and shortstop. So, did his high school coach Greg Vitello know back then Mueller would make it to the big leagues?
Greg Vitello, De Smet Baseball Coach
"No, and that's just to be totally honest. But he was just the kind of guy that had the work ethic of a major leaguer. The kind of guy when it's 25 degrees and the infield is still frozen he didn't mind taking ground balls with his dad."
Just four years ago, Bill's dad became the assistant coach for the school's baseball team but long before that he had been teaching his son that game for years.
Bill Mueller, Red Sox 3rd Baseman
"It’s such a good memory to have with your dad. And my mom would sit out there and watch us. It was nice. They did whatever it was to raise a great kid and I’m very thankful for that."
No matter which team wins the World Series, Mueller will always be honored in his high school's hall of fame.
Greg Vitello, De Smet Baseball Coach
"I think everyone in St. Louis wants Bill to go 4 for 4 every night, but they want the Cardinals to win the series."
