Toss it or fix it?

That Makes Cents: Toss it or fix it?

Posted: 08/06/09

Experts say there's a good rule of thumb for shoes and appliances. If you're likely to get a year's use by repairing them, it's usually worth it.

And shoe repair shops can fix more than your footwear. Anything that's leather can usually be fixed for less than $50.

When it comes to appliances, even air conditioners can often be repaired for much less than the cost of buying a new one. But, experts say if the repair cost is 70% of the item's value, you should probably toss it.

And remember not everything can be fixed.

Appliance repairmen say they don't fix ice makers in refrigerators. They replace those if they go bad.

And the same goes for garbage disposals, the labor costs for repairs are pricey.

Now that makes cents.
