That Makes Cents: How to save on groceries

Here are some shopping tips to help you save cash at the check-out counter.

Some items, like cheese, are found in more than one aisle, and the prices can be a lot different. Deli packed cheddar is the same as brand name cheddar from the dairy case, but will cost you a lot less.

Be on the look out for discounted deals. Stores routinely reduce their prices by as much as 50 percent on baked goods, produce, dairy and meat as those products reach their sell-by date.

Be sure to scan the shelves for the best bargains, which could be above or below eye level.

And, shop on Sundays. By combining coupons and sales from circulars, some shoppers report saving as much as $678 a year.

Now that makes cents.
