Mardi Gras King Cake

 Next week is Mardi Gras, and if you can't make it down to New Orleans, here's a recipe for a traditional Fat Tuesday food that is easy to make at home!

RECIPE:

2 Cups whole milk
1 cup water
3/4 oz. salt
2 1/2 0z granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon vanilla flavor
1/8 teaspoon lemon flavor
3 oz eggs
1/8 teaspoon egg food coloring
2 3/4 pounds bread flour
2 1/2 oz Crisco (all purpose shortening)

Filling:

8 oz. granulated sugar
2 plain unfrosted vanilla cupcake crumbled up.
1/2 teaspoon cinn.
combine and set aside.

Frosting :

3/4 cups confectionary sugar
1/4 cup lemon juice

3-6 tablespoons water
Combine cover and set aside.

You will need 1/4 cup of each Yellow, green and purple sugar you may color it yourself or buy it at the store.

Mix all ingredients together on low speed for 2 minutes, then 8 minutes on high speed.

Divide dough in half roll out using a rolling pin or flatten and stretch out with your hands.

Brush flattened dough with water sprinkle cinn. sugar mixture, Roll up the dough in a tight fashion, and while rolling insert either a small bean, or a plastic toy baby into roll hiding it

Forming a circle with the rolled up dough place onto a greased cookie sheet one piece per tray this allows room for dough to rise, cover with a piece of plastic and a towel to keep warm, let proof about 20 minutes or until risen about 3/4 its size

CAREFULLY remove covering, so you don't knock the proofed dough down., Otherwise you will have to reproof it.

Bake @ 350 for 50-60 minutes until golden brown.

After cake is cooled off cover with icing and sprinkle a section of green sugar, one section of purple sugar, and one section of yellow sugar.
