National Grid warns customers about scam

UNDATED (WHDH) -- National Grid warned its customers about telephone calls from crooks pretending to work for the utility company.
- Thieves posing as workers
- Demand payment on past due balances
- Threaten to shut off power
- Ask for account numbers over phone
The crooks demand payment on past due balances for electric accounts, telling customers their service will immediately be shut off for nonpayment.
In some cases - they'll even tell the customer that they have a faulty meter that's dangerous and in need of replacing for a substantial fee.
They then ask for bank account information over the phone.
