PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) -- The Rhode Island School of Design is celebrating a $1 million donation, the largest gift the fine arts school has ever received from an international donor.
The contribution announced Friday comes from a couple from Bangalore, India, whose daughter graduated from RISD last year. The money will create an endowed fund to support a visiting faculty position in the school's painting department. The school's hope is to attract artists and scholars from India or elsewhere who have a connection to Indian arts and culture.
RISD President John Maeda says the gift reflects the school's interest in establishing partnerships and relationships with students, faculty and organizations around the world.
