Jaehyun Lee - Shrewsbury High School
Jaehyun Lee from Shrewsbury High School
Since meeting Jae last year as a student in my 8th grade class, I have been amazed at his ambition to help others and with his leadership in motivating other students to become engaged in service. Within the first month of school last year, Jae took all of the necessary steps to start an official school club that he called GMAD – Students Globally Making A Difference. The group met every week, under Jae’s leadership. Their main project was to try to collect books from students in our middle school to send to students in Uganda, where Jae’s grandparents spent time as volunteers. After successfully collecting and sorting through hundreds of books, the final weight of the books meant the shipping costs to Africa were way more than initially anticipated. Jae moved on to the high school this year, where he continues to lead the GMAD group. They have organized other service projects and continued to reach out to their peers to get involved. Jae even held the 3 on 3 basketball tournament at our school again, hopefully making it an annual event.
I am including a picture that Jae emailed to me during the summer after his 8th grade year. In addition to being so amazingly impressed with his efforts, I was so touched that he thought to share the picture with me. Jae is such an exceptional young man who has already made a difference, locally and globally – he is, no doubt, a true class act.
