Alyssa Shashaty - Peabody Higgins Middle School
Alyssa has set a goal for herself to run a 5k road race in all 50 states for 50 different charities before turning 16. She ran her first 5k in Washington DC for the Susan G Komen breast cancer foundation because her friends Mom had breast cancer and a friend of the family had breast cancer. She then did not run another race until the summer of her 7th grade year where she ran the Northshore Cancer Run in Salem, Ma on her friend Athena's Moms team.
She then decided to get Team 777 together (7 kids in the 7th grade to raise 700.00 for Progeria). A foundation based in Peabody which took about 100 letters just to get 7 kids to sign on for the team, but she did it and they raised $1003.00 for Progeria. Through fund raising she learned that many people were not even aware what progeria was and there were probably a lot of other causes out there, so she set a goal for herself. So, since last year she has completed 15 states and 21 races because she can never say no to a good cause or race in MA.
She ran the Jolly Jaunt in Danvers with 5 friends dressed like elves for Special Olympics, Best Buddies in Hyannis on Tom Brady's Team and last Monday in Beverly for The Wofenden Family from The Boston Marathon. She will be running in May on 19th in Virginia for Homes For Our Troops. She ran a race in California at the Los Alamitos Joint Training Base for Honoring Our Fallen. She was so touched by all the children that she met at the pasta dinner the night before the race that she has now made it her goal to try to collect 100 toys to donate to the The Hero Children's Bereavement Program that Honoring Our Fallen has. She also went to Chicago and built a park bench with her Grandfather who is a vet and had a plaque made for Honoring Our Fallen on the bench and is hoping to have it put in Endicott Park for Memorial Day because that is where she ran her first race. She does all this community service is an Honor Student, plays percussion in the band and plays the piano. She also plays lacrosse, soccer, basketball, and runs on the track team.
She has bake sales every month to raise money for her charity and has a goal to raise at least 25.00 for every charity she runs for and has raised as much as 2295.00. She has also ran in Colorado for Homefront Heroes, Connecticut for MS, Florida for Angel Snugs, Illinois for the Durand Community, Maine for the Sheriff's Baseball Team, Minnesota for the Jewish Community Center, Nevada for Chefs 4 Kids, New Hamshire for the Rotary, Ohio for Wigs 4 Kids, Pennsylvania for Salvation Army, Texas for The Eye Association and Wisconsin for Laps 4 Literacy.
