24 students - Excel High School
This is the second year of buildOn in the Boston Public Schools. Last year, 12 students total from three high schools (Excel, Community Academy of Science and Health and Boston Community Leadership Academy) spent the year fundraising and performing community service in their own communities, culminating in a service learning trip to Malawi, Africa, where they helped dig the foundation for an elementary school in a remote village. This year, the group has doubled in size to 24 students. They have completed over 1,500 hours of group and individual community service at locations around the city including at the Greater Boston Food Bank, Community Servings, Room to Grow, the Franklin Park Coalition, Casa Nueva Vida, the Boston Animal Shelter, the Boys and Girls Club, the Walk for Hunger, painting offices with City Year, the Charles River Conservancy, the Boston Globe and the Community Center in Fields Corner. In June, they will be traveling together to break ground for a new elementary schools in a two villages in Senegal. As one of the six teachers working with this group, I nominate them for coverage as a true Class Act!
