Michael J. McCarthy - Walpole High School
Michael J. McCarthy
I would like to nominate my Grandson Michael McCarthy as a Class Act...Michael, who is a twin, was born 8 weeks early and weighted less than 21/2lbs at birth. He was born with Cerebal Palsey, as was his twin brother Jimmy, and has mild retardation. He was born on Oct. 11th and never came home until Dec. 24th, Christmas Eve.
All during his school years Michael progressed into a happy, outgoing, generous and kind young man. His parents never treated him or his brother diffently from any other boys their age, (he is now 16) they would take them hiking, bowling, and both boys had to shoot 50 hoops daily, they belonged to a gym so that they could swim all winter and have their own pool. Just a little backround to show that Mike was never coddled....
In grammer and middle school, Michael would get to school by 7am so that he could do the morning news for the school, he is very bright, and when it comes to knowing sports he is outstanding, especially when it comes to football. In the past few summers, Michael has attended the Hockomock area Ymca in North Attleboro, where he has become very popular with his councilers and other campers, in fact, about three years ago Michael was invited to be an usher (escort past players) at the Legends Ball, he was so popular with the past and present players, that by the end of the night, he was recieving many gifts and high fyes from most of them...He was invited back the following year by popular demand and also became their Poster Boy...Bragging Grandma I know, but need to give you some backround...
This year a wonderful thing happened in Michael's life, someone at Walpole High School decided to give Mike a chance to let him run track, he is also on the Junior Varcity Javalin team. If you could see what this one boy has done for school spirit, it has brought tears to my eyes, the other students cheer him on even thou he is always last, he does not need any guidance when he is doing these acts, knows where to go, where to place and overall is on his own....Michael is breaking bounderies in these areas, and perhaps opening doors for other Michaels who want a chance to just be like the other kids.....Thursday night Michael walked the Red Carpet at Walpole high school with the rest of the cast the of a Movie that the students made, this involved writing, directing and production of the Movie......
Even if Michael is not chosen to be featured on your program, you just have to meet this amazing boy, he will make you smile and you will never forget him....Yes he is special in more ways than I could ever say!!!!
