Class Act: Darrien Tan
WELLESLEY, Mass. (WHDH) -- Darrien Tan, 16, of Wellesley High School started Top Soccer, a community-based soccer program for kids with physical or developmental disabilities, in his hometown.
Darrien learned about the program when he was helping out in another town.
“One of my teammates, his mother runs the program, so he invited me to volunteer there. I saw how much it changed the kids there, so I thought, why not bring this to my hometown?” said Darrien.
Darrien and a group of his friends got funding and field time. They have already registered about 18 kids from kindergarten to eighth grade.
“It’s so great just to see the smiles on their faces when they score the ball into the goal for the first time,” said Leigh Gelotte, a friend of Darrien
Logan Green, 11, can’t hide his happiness when he plays Top Soccer and he loves playing alongside Darrien.
“When he’s my helper, he’s nice to me. He makes me feel much better and confident about myself,” said Logan.
“Once you actually start helping you tailor what you need to do to meet the needs of the kids,” said Darrien.
Logan has a message for Darrien: “Thank you for starting it because it’s really helping me improve.”
