Base Buddies for Little Wiffles Challenger League -- Norton High School
Base Buddies for Little Wiffles Challenger League
I would like to nominate a group of high school students called Base Buddies that are one on one's with children with disabilities under the Norton Youth Baseball/Softball Challnger League. This division started 4 years ago and these high school students come out every Saturday to play wiffle ball with children ages 4 to 10. The players have a wide varity of special needs ranging from Down Syndrome to all phases of Autism. These high school student, if they particapated all 4 years will have over 120 hours of community service upon graduation. They are a group of 35 to 40 students that get up early on a Saturday morning to be at the field by 9:00 a.m. to be with their buddy. The bonds and friendships that have formed is beyond words. Upon graduation some have gone on to work with children with special needs and majoring in special ed at college. These students are remarkable the love and friendship they have given these players gives the parents a chance to sit back and enjoy watching their child play in an organized sport with their peers. This was unheard of in Norton 4 years ago. In the fall we have around 20 players but the spring we can have over 30. The players come from Norton and surrounding towns. They play spring and fall ball and participate in all aspects of the league from opening day to pictures etc. My daughter organizes these Base Buddies and is overjoyed each year on how many students want to come out and join the Little Wiffes. Most of these students do not need the community service hours but come out just because it ia a unique opportunity for them. I feel the Base Buddies make this league run, without them it would not be a league. They should be recognized for all they do for these children. I am the founder of this league and feel that this would be a true tribute for them to be honored for all their hard work. If you cannot fit them in we would love for you to come to Norton High School on a Saturday morning at 9:00 to see yourself cry and laugh for a good hour. We play in the Fall until October 26th and then start up on the first weekend in May. These students deseserve a little honor and what is great about them is that they do not look for much in return. The Base Buddies get a t-shirt from ESP Solutions in Taunton free of charge with Base Buddy on their backs and wear them with pride. We have thousands of pictures and lots of smiles, please come by. I am the founder of this league and would love to see you at a game or two. Thank you for your time and consideration.
