Spoleto Festival celebrates Philip Glass' 75th
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) -- Another season of the Spoleto Festival USA opens next week in South Carolina.
More than 140 shows are planned in Charleston when the festival opens Friday, including the opera "Kepler" by American composer Philip Glass. It's the American premiere of the opera and commemorates both Glass' 75th birthday and his long relationship with Spoleto.
Festival General Director Nigel Redden says the range of different performances at this year's festival is as broad as it has ever been.
The festival offers everything from opera and classical concerts to a concert by singer/songwriter k.d. lang, Dublin's Gate Theatre presenting Noel Coward's "Hay Fever" and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater.
The festival continues on stages through the finale and fireworks on June 10 at Middleton Place.
