BOSTON -- The New Kids on the Block were back in town, and they were given their very own day.

Friday, September 26, was declared "New Kids on the Block Day" by Mayor Thomas M. Menino in a ceremony at City Hall Friday.

The famous local boy band kicked off their reunion tour in Boston with a sold-out show at the Garden Friday night.

In an emotional presentation, the band was presented with the key to the city.

But the New Kids said it was the city that was the key to their success.

"This place builds character, no doubt about it," said Danny Wood. "The way that we grew up with Boston, going to public schools here, it made us who we are."

Hailing from the neighborhood streets of Dorchester and Jamaica Plain, Jordan Knight, Jonathan Knight, Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg and Danny Wood, forever defined what the modern boy band would look and sound like.

Fans of all ages poured into the Garden to support the return of their favorite boy band.

Natasha Bedingfield opened the show.
