HINGHAM, Mass. (WHDH) -- Hollywood star and Dorchester native Mark Wahlberg brought his latest project back to the Bay State.

In Mark Wahlberg's newest movie, “Broken City,” he's playing a character that's close to his heart.

“They’re all underdog characters. They’re all guys that I can relate to. They all have to redeem themselves in some sort of way. And they’re all kind of forced to deal with that moral dilemma and I just love those characters,” Wahlberg said on the ‘Today’ show.

Wahlberg was home in the Bay State Tuesday night for a special screening of the movie for his family and friends -- and some big names from the New England Patriots attended. Olympic Judo gold medalist Kayla Harrison also attended.

He's hosted previews at the Hingham theatre before; his brother owns two restaurants nearby.

And for fans of Boston movie stars, start thinking about a possible Wahlberg, Ben Affleck joint venture. Wahlberg not only wants to work with the other native son, he thinks Affleck was robbed of an Oscar nomination.

“Boston guys are very competitive. He’s from Cambridge, I’m from Dorchester -- I wouldn’t normally give him any credit (I want to beat those guys every chance I get) but he is the real deal as a filmmaker. I would love to work with him,” Wahlberg said.

Wahlberg spent several minutes signing autographs before the screening began.
