Johnny Depp to take on role of Whitey Bulger in new film

UNDATED (WHDH) -- From the jail cell to the big screen -- one of Hollywood’s top names will take on the role of a notorious Boston criminal.

Johnny Depp is set to star as gangster, James "Whitey" Bulger.

The thriller, "Black Mass" has been scheduled to start shooting in May 2013.

The film will recount the real-life story of the South Boston mobster.

Bulger was arrested, back in 2011 after 16 years on the run.

Bulger's trial is set to begin in June.

He is accused of participating in 19 murders.
