MACOMB, Mich. (NBC) -- A big time star and Detroit icon is dedicated to giving back.

“Try to help my neighbors first,” said Kid Rock.

The motor city's very own Kid Rock was on hand for a very big and special surprise.

Sgt. Davin Dumar was injured serving our country, and today he and his wife thought they were being interviewed hoping to make the next round in receiving an amazing gift - a new home.

Instead, they learned that because of donations by Kid Rock, Operation Finally Home and Pulte Homes - they’ll soon be new homeowners.

The Macomb Home will be designed to help Sgt. Dumar cope with his very special needs.

“I’m completely shocked, it’s great,” said Sgt. Dumar.

They enjoyed a celebratory cigar outside, then a peek at the new property where the home will be built.

For Kid Rock, who does so much to help so many, this was a no-brainer.

“My philosophy is to always help your neighbor first. So I was like, ‘I know there’s some guys coming back from this war who need help too. can we take a look up there in Michigan?’ It’s not just, have you been wounded, we try to find people who are all around great people. Lo and behold - Sgt. Dumar,” said Kid Rock.

Operation Finally Home has built 50 homes in 11 states. The Dumar’s home will be finished early next year.
