Copper thief strikes Malden Fire Dept. system
MALDEN, Mass. (WHDH) -- Emergency responders in Malden might be a bit slower responding to emergencies as vandals keep cutting their firebox cables.
According to city officials the theft started a few weeks ago when someone took a few feet of the cable. On Monday, two more sections of cable were cut and stolen.
"That is not just some copper cable or some cable that for whatever reason is being cut. It is affecting the fire protection in our Community,” Malden Fire Chief Jack Colangeli said.
The thieves likely aren’t taking the copper wire for money, it’s only worth a few cents, but they are risking serious delays from the fire department.
"Knowing our police chief and fire chief I’m confident that we're going to catch whoever did this and also come up with a plan to ensure that this will never again,” Malden Mayor Gary Christenson said.
