Shark spotter gives 7NEWS aerial view of Cape

CHATHAM, Mass. -- To spot a shark off the coast of the Cape, the best bet is a bird’s eye view.

Norman St. Pierre has been a spotter pilot on the Cape for nearly 30 years.

"You get a whole different perspective up here, and it's much more of an adventure up here than it is in a boat because you get to see everything," said St. Pierre.

Soon after taking 7NEWS up to the sky on Wednesday, St. Pierre and 7's Steve Cooper spotted a great white shark lurking in the water 100 feet off the coast.

“There used to be 25 of us, and there’s only four or five of us left because of the depletion of the blue fin stock and there’s not hardly any big ones around,” said St. Pierre.

St. Pierre said when it comes to sharks, searching from the sky can make a huge difference.

“It’s always an adventure, just like I’ve been looking at whales my whole life, and when I see one, I still get excited.

St. Pierre expects a busy few weeks on the Cape, but said it’s work that never gets old.
