BOSTON -- A new donation will help Boston provide a breath of fresh air for our four-legged friends.

Pet owners can breathe a little easier knowing the Boston Fire Department is now equipped with 60 special oxygen masks designed especially for cats and dogs should a fire ever break out in their homes.

"When you talk about loved ones... pets are loved ones as well. And for many people in this city, their immediate family consists of their pets," said Steve Murphy, Boston City Councilor.

Starting Wednesday, the Boston Fire Department will be fully equipped to assist pets suffering from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters will carry oxygen masks in three different sizes specifically made for pets, which is something that is needed more than many may think.

"Fire departments, as first responders, often find the family pet hiding in closets, under beds, or under tables. If the pets are not seen and rescued, they are often overcome by carbon monoxide or smoke inhalation," said Richard Rodger of the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association.

The availability of these masks can mean the difference between life and death for family pets.

The Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association's goal is to have masks in every fire house across the Commonwealth.

The Fire Department received the 60 masks as a donation from the Massachusetts Veterinary Medical Association and the Tewksbury pet food company, "Wellpet."
