Uxbridge multi-car crash sends 3 to hospital

UXBRIDGE, Mass. -- A multi-car accident sent three people, including a pregnant woman, to the hospital on Tuesday. The impact of the crash was so strong it left a tractor-trailer sitting on its side.
The accident involved four cars and spanned 600 feet on Route 16 in Uxbridge.
“I’m thinking, I’m not involved in this,” said Donald Basso, a crash victim. “And then I’m thinking I might be involved in this…It just keeps getting bigger and bigger. It starts rotating sideways.”
Police said a now mangled Toyota Camry crossed lanes and hit a tractor-trailer, knocking off some of its tires.
“There was a really loud crash and I jumped up - it gave me a heart attack. He slammed on his brakes and then you just heard skidding and metal scrapping down the road,” said Melissa Dewar.
A dump truck carrying an excavator tried to regain control, but couldn’t. It tipped 600 feet later, hitting two other cars.
“That’s a good sign that the operator of the truck was paying attention and tried to recover,” said Chief Ernest Horn of the Mendon Police Department.
Those three drivers were okay, but shaken.
“The driver of the dump truck starts walking up the street and he’s like a drunken man almost. I tried to get him to sit down because I thought he was going to - and then I had to sit down because I thought I was going to pass out,” said Basso.
The driver who initially caused the crash was trapped and the rescuers had to use the Jaws of Life to free the victim. The driver is in critical condition.
It is unknown the exact cause of the crash and if charges will be filed.
