State police investigate double-fatal crash in Ludlow

UNDATED (WHDH) -- The following is a release from the Massachusetts State Police.
Today at 8:30 p.m., troopers assigned to the Massachusetts State Police Barracks in Charlton responded to reports of a four-car motor vehicle crash on the westbound side of Massachusetts Turnpike, by Exit 6, in Ludlow that resulted in two fatalities.
Preliminary investigation by troopers on scene indicates that one of the four vehicles was traveling eastbound on the westbound side of the turnpike. The wrong-way driver collided with another vehicle head on, causing the four vehicle crash. The operator driving the wrong-way was an 84-year-old man. He collided with a car being driven by a 29-year-old man.
The Ludlow Fire Department removed the victims from the vehicles and Ludlow EMS transported them to Bay State Medical Center in critical condition. The two victims who collided head on succumbed to their injuries and were pronounced deceased at the hospital. State Police are not releasing their identities at this time.
The facts and circumstances of the crash remain under investigation by Troop E of the Massachusetts State Police with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Ludlow Fire Department, Ludlow EMS, and Mass DOT also assisted at the scene.
