BOSTON (WHDH) -- With a prolonged easterly fetch, piling up the sea and pushing it toward the coast, coastal flooding becomes a huge issue for many during the mid-day high tide cycle. With strong winds out of the east, the eastern facing shores are most vulnerable, while some towns in Buzzards Bay, closer to the canal, won't have too much of an issue. The southern end of Buzzards Bay, near New Bedford, over to Westport are more prone to issues, though, with major flooding expected in Westport at the 8PM high tide.

High tides run close to noon for most, although it’s around 8:00-8:30PM for most of Buzzards Bay. Another thing to keep in mind, although coastal flooding peaks at high tide, coastal flooding will start a couple hours ahead of high tide, and continue for at least a couple hours after high tide. Many shore roads in flood prone areas that experience major coastal flooding will end up having enough ocean water covering the roads that once the ocean recedes, washouts in the road and leftover sand/rocks will likely be a result.
