PEABODY, Mass. -- Four people were attacked by a pit bull Thursday afternoon.

A Peabody police officer was among the victims attacked at the Newbury Street home in Peabody.

"We could hear a girl screaming, ‘Help us! There's blood everywhere. Call 911!' " said Caitlin Fitzpatrick, a neighbor.

Fitzpatrick soon learned that a pit bull at the house across the street had attacked three girls. One was bit in the back; another had multiple bites.

"Her arm was all shredded up; there was blood from head to toe," Fitzpatrick said.

When police arrived on the scene they were told there was another girl in the home with the dog. An officer went in, which is when he was attacked by the pit bull.

Moments later, animal control rushed in and got the girl and the dog out through a back door.

Neighbors said the girl was unresponsive.

The dog owner came home shortly after the attack and told police that the girls were trespassing even though one of the women was his live-in girlfriend.

"It's scary, very, very scary. There's a lot of kids around here. I don't think it should be living there," said one neighbor.

The dog remains with police as they investigate.
