Globe union sets conditions on cost cut talks

BOSTON -- The Boston Globe's largest union says it's ready to negotiate labor cost cuts with the management and its parent, The New York Times Co.
But the Boston Newspaper Guild attached conditions in a statement released Tuesday, including a revenue-sharing deal with the Times and Globe management.
It also said it would not negotiate on matters that don't relate to cost savings.
The union has said previously that the Times Co. had threatened to shut down the newspaper unless the unions agreed to $20 million in concessions.
The guild also proposed to conduct negotiations directly with a proposed buyer if the Times intends to sell the paper after making cutbacks.
The guild represents more than 700 employees at the paper.
