Mass. man held after child struck and killed

HOLYOKE, Mass. -- A Chicopee man is being held by police after allegedly driving drunk and killing a 6-year-old boy who was crossing a Holyoke street.
Angel Ortiz was being held on $50,000 bail Saturday and is scheduled for arraignment Monday on a charge of motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence of alcohol.
Police said Kyier Douchette was crossing Main Street when Ortiz hit him at about 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Holyoke police Lt. Michael Higgins said Ortiz told police he heard a noise, saw the boy in the road, and pulled over immediately.
Witnesses said Douchette crossed in the crosswalk when the light was green, which Higgins said pedestrians are permitted to do.
A family member of Ortiz's said Saturday that he did not yet have a lawyer, and declined comment.
