UNH police searching for suspects in Halloween assault

DURHAM, N.H. -- Police in New Hampshire are searching for suspects and witnesses after a student was attacked on the campus at the University of New Hampshire.

A 21-year-old male student was walking home from a friend's dorm when he was attacked.

He was repeated kicked and punched outside Sawyer Hall around 11:30 p.m. on Halloween night.

The victim suffered broken bones in his face and bruising to the upper torso.

According police, there may have been as many as five people involved in the assault, as well as multiple witnesses.

One of the suspects is said to have been wearing a costume, dressed as either a banana or hot dog.

"I have no idea why someone would do something like that especially while dressed in a banana suit, that's our biggest lead right now someone's wearing a banana suit," said Tegan Labarre.

The suspects are all described as male, medium build, between 5'10" and 6'1".

Police said students are trying to help, setting up search groups on Facebook.

"Often times it's the over-consumption of alcohol, and I wish I could explain it better than that but a lot of times discretion and good judgment don't necessarily play a role in decision making," said Sgt. Steven Lee, of the UNH police

Police are also eager to talk with a male who may have witnessed the assault and then helped the victim up and away from the scene after it occurred.

Anyone with information is urged to call (603) 862-1427.
