BELMONT, Mass. -- A 17-year-old girl was struck and killed by a commuter train behind Belmont High School Thursday.

The victim was struck by an inbound commuter train on the Fitchburg Line around 12:40 p.m Thursday about 250 yards from the nearest crossing area.

Authorities said the area is a popular cut through on the tracks that students are constantly warned not to use.

The teen was a student at Belmont High School. She was killed instantly.

Police said the engineer saw the girl on the tracks. He hit the brakes, but struck the girl. The train came to a stop a short distance after impact.

"This afternoon the transit police and Belmont police received a report that a person was struck on the MBTA commuter rail tracks behind Belmont High School, Emergency responders from Belmont fire, Belmont police, and transit police responded to the scene that a teenage female was struck by the train. Investigators and responders checked for life and it was absence of life," said a Belmont police spokesman.

The victim's name has not been released.

Grief counselors were on hand at Belmont High School on Friday.
