Local family feels impact of shooting at Fort Hood
PLAINVILLE, Mass. -- Americans across this country are feeling the emotional toll of the attack at Fort Hood.
Military families are feeling especially vulnerable.
The armed services are a close-knit community and what happened at Fort Hood is hard to comprehend especially for families with relatives there.
The Eastman family, of Plainville, received a text message from their 26-year-old son Keith on Thursday that read in part, "Tell everyone I'm ok. I'm in a building at the center of the base."
Keith was on base at Fort Hood at the time of the shootings. He couldn't call to let his family know he was alright because phone lines were jammed.
"I was very concerned and started praying and hoping that I would hear that everyone was ok," said Celeste Eastman.
The family said their hearts go out to those affected by the shooting.
"It's difficult to say 'oh thank goodness my son is okay' because at the same time, my heart is breaking for the other parents. It's tough," said Cooper Eastman.
The Eastmans said their son is expected to be deployed sometime next year, while not thinking a scare would come while he was still on base.
