US troops in Mass. mourn those killed at Fort Hood

NATICK, Mass. -- Soldiers at the U.S. military's complex in Massachusetts that researches and develops support items for troops have joined colleagues worldwide to mourn 13 people killed during a shooting spree at Fort Hood in Texas.

The MetroWest Daily News reports that soldiers at the U.S. Army Soldier Systems Center in Natick on Friday observed a moment of silence at 2:34 p.m., exactly 24 hours after Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan allegedly opened fire at the largest active duty armored post in the United States.

Thirty other people were wounded.

Secretary of Defense Robert Gates declared a moment of silence for U.S. military forces, asking troops deployed worldwide to participate.

During the Natick ceremony, a flag detail lowered the post's flag to half-staff.
