MEDFORD, Mass. -- A bad batch of brownies sent two children to the hospital in Medford.

The children, ages 9 and 7, left Columbus Elementary School in an ambulance Wednesday.

The superintendent said the older child was eating her lunch when she bit into a homemade brownie and there was a strange crunch.

Her teacher brought her and her younger brother to the nurse when she realized there was a prescription pill inside.

School officials did not believe the younger child had any of the brownies, but they just wanted to be sure. The nurse called poison control, police, and paramedics.

The pill found in the brownie was Topamax, an anti-seizure medication that can also treat migraines.

“We obviously initiated an investigation with police and the department of children and families to insure that the children are safe and to find out what happened in the home. The police reached the mother. We had DCF workers reach the mother. The mother did not want to talk to police without an attorney. So investigation will go on. In the meantime the children are safe and DCF will follow through with the children,” said Superintendent Roy Belson, Medford Public Schools.

The superintendent said that the proper procedure if the child is taking medication is to inform the school, but the school nurse did not know of any medications that the children were taking.

The assistant principal said the children are doing well and are being kept at the hospital for observation.
