RI State Trooper dies in car accident

A 20-year veteran of the Rhode Island State Police died in a car accident.

Detective Sgt. James Dougherty, Jr., 41, was off duty when the car he was driving early Sunday morning hydroplaned.

The vehicle struck a utility pole along Route 3 in West Greenwich, where he was pronounced dead.

Dougherty is survived by his wife who is also a State Police detective.
