Ford inspected police cruiser involved in fatal crash
BEVERLY, Mass. -- The mayor of Beverly says he doesn't think mechanical problems caused a fatal weekend crash involving a city police cruiser.
William Scanlon says Ford Motor Company inspected the vehicle last year for unexplained acceleration and found nothing wrong with it.
The cruiser driven by on-duty Beverly police officer Stewart Merry veered across a double-yellow line Saturday and struck a parked vehicle. The crash killed a woman whose name has not been released.
Scanlon says three 2006 Crown Victorias purchased by the police department were inspected by Ford after officers complained of acceleration problems. He says the company cleared all of the vehicles.
The cruiser involved in Saturday's crash has been turned over to state police for examination.
