Veteran Springfield cop recommended for police commissioner post
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- A familiar face in the Springfield police department is a step closer to becoming the city's next police commissioner.
A search committee voted 4-0 Thursday to recommend William Fitchet for the post.
The 35-year veteran of the department has been serving as acting police commissioner since Edward Flynn left in January to become Milwaukee's police chief.
The city's Finance Control Board is expected to vote next Thursday on the recommendation.
Fitchet was chosen by the search committee over two other finalists: Chatham Police Chief Mark Pawlina; and Patrick Ridenhour, assistant deputy chief of the Waterbury, Conn., police force.
