Politicians react with shock to news that Kennedy has brain tumor
BOSTON -- Politicians from the current president to a would-be president, from both sides of the political aisle, are reacting with shock at the news that Senator Edward Kennedy has a malignant brain tumor.
A spokeswoman says President Bush was "deeply saddened" by the news and will keep the Democratic icon in his prayers.
Republican presidential candidate John McCain said Kennedy is the single most effective member of the Senate and wished a "full recovery."
Representative Charles Rangel, a New York Democrat, noted that he is a year older than Kennedy and he had just beaten an illness. Rangel says he is "confident" Kennedy can do the same.
Republican Senator John Warner says he was "lost for words" when he heard the news.
