Man sentenced for starting paper mill fire
GREENFIELD, Mass. -- A Montague man convicted of torching a 136-year-old Franklin County paper mill has been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
Jonathan Tanzer was sentenced Tuesday in Greenfield Superior Court after his conviction for charges including breaking and entering and arson. He was credited for a year spent behind bars while awaiting trial.
The 44-year-old Tanzer was convicted last month of starting the May 2007 fire that destroyed a building at the Strathmore paper mill in Turners Falls. Firefighters from five Massachusetts counties responded.
Prosecutors say Tanzer, a former mill employee, was angry at the owner and trying to steal copper wire.
Tanzer's lawyer says his client did not intend to start the fire.
