BOSTON -- Meteorologists have confirmed that a small tornado touched down in Rhode Island and ripped across the Massachusetts border, knocking down trees and damaging homes and power lines.
Forecasters at the National Weather Service said a waterspout was first spotted Wednesday off Rumstick Point in Barrington, R.I., around 4 p.m. It made land in southern Warren, R.I., then headed east and tore through Swansea, Mass.
Wind speeds were estimated at 65 to 75 mph, although a small section of Warren appeared damaged by winds that hit 90 mph.
The tornado traveled just over four miles. It left a path about 40 yards wide.
No injuries were reported.
Forecasters initially believed the funnel cloud did not touch land, but they changed their minds after conducting a damage survey Thursday.
