Dog left in sun dies, another barely survives

LAWRENCE, Mass. -- A local man is facing animal cruelty charges after he left his dogs out on a hot balcony without food and water.

A concerned neighbor saw the animals and told her son to call 911.

"I saw the dead dog," said Anna Azzona, a witness.

Officials responded and found a 2 ½ year old French bulldog dead on a sun-baked balcony at 20 Knox Street. Another dog was in horrible condition.

According to medical reports, both dogs had body temperatures over 104 degrees.

Ryan Colon, 21, was arraigned in court Thursday on animal cruelty charges.  

He told the judge that he had left his home because of flooding problems and that he left the dogs on the balcony.

Colon was ordered to hand custody of his remaining dog to the police department.
