SHARON, Mass. -- A local man hopes to set a world record for the largest pumpkin.

Steve Connolly, of Sharon, has turned his hobby into a passion. He is trying to set a world record for the largest pumpkin.

"This is crossed with a 1689 Jutris pumpkin," Connolly said. "Joe Jutris was the world record holder last year and hopefully I'll break his record this year. I'll find out soon."

Connolly's pumpkin weighs in at a whopping 1,800 pounds.

He said it takes special care to grow a gourd of such proportions.

"Theres a lot of good things in here," he said of the natural fertilizers he has used consisting of molasses, sea kelp, cow manure and several other items.

Steve said he has received calls from David Letterman's show, Martha Stewart and Good Morning America.

Everyone is dying to get a look. Neighbors say there have been drivers slowing down trying to catch a glance.

Connolly's pumpkin will be on display at Frerich's Farm in Warren, R.I. next Saturday, October 11, for their annual pumpkin festival.
