Woman dies during c-section at Boston hospital

BOSTON -- A mother died during a cesarean section at a Boston hospital.

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center confirmed the death Tuesday.

Karen Vasques, 37, of Medford, died last Friday during an emergency procedure after her baby experienced complications.

The child survived and is showing signs of improvement.

"This is obviously a very sad and distressing event for our staff at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center who have not experienced a loss like this for over 10 years. We continue to extend our deepest sympathy to the family," the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said in a statement.

Officials at Beth Israel Medical Center have launched an internal investigation.
